Civil Engineering Technician

Visa sponsorship

Engineering · Perth, WA, Australia · Full-Time · $80,000 - $90,000/yr · Visa: Employer sponsored

Earthworks, site preparation and civil projects for residential, commercial and industrial developments are the specialty of a Western Australian earthmoving and civil construction company that is growing. It is hiring a Civil Engineering Technician as technical backup for its Civil Engineer across several of those projects.

The job is permanent and full-time, Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts. You would alternate between drafting and documentation at a desk, in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and time on site taking measurements, testing materials, inspecting work and checking quality against the approved designs, the Australian Standards, the project specification and WHS rules.

Under the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand program, qualified applicants who satisfy the relevant immigration requirements may be able to have their visa sponsored.

A technician's CV should show the drawing software you use, the tests and inspections you have carried out and your site experience. If you are in Nairobi or Mombasa, assemble a Civil Engineering Technician CV with Build AI CV.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Civil Engineer on drainage, trenching, excavation, site preparation and earthworks drawings, plans and details, using AutoCAD and Civil 3D to prepare, read and amend them
  • Update as-built drawings, registers and technical records
  • Measure on site, noting ground levels, excavation sizes, earthworks profiles and drainage gradients, and flag differences between those, the survey data and the approved drawings and specs to the Civil Engineer
  • Help carry out soil and material tests in the field and the laboratory and interpret the results
  • Inspect earthworks, excavation, trenching and drainage and record non-conformances; watch soil placement, filling, backfilling and compaction against engineering requirements
  • Work out and verify earthworks, cut-and-fill and material quantities, write quantity schedules and tender documents, and help estimate material and labour quantities and costs
  • Turn field data and test results into reports, checklists and compliance records
  • Review subcontractor drawings, method statements and submissions against the approved drawings and specifications
  • Pass site technical information to supervisors, machinery operators, subcontractors and surveyors, keep accurate records for verification, quality control and handover, and report site conditions or issues that could affect quality or compliance

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering, Civil Construction, Building Engineering Technology or a related discipline (a different qualification may be considered where substantial relevant experience supports it)
  • Minimum 2 years in civil construction, drainage, site preparation, earthworks or civil engineering technical support
  • Working knowledge of the Australian Standards that apply, among them AS 3798 and the relevant parts of the AS 1289 series
  • Practical competency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • Able to interpret drawings and specifications, take site measurements and help calculate quantities, with an understanding of technical inspections, construction quality control and non-conformance reporting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word; MS Project desirable
  • Strong communication and coordination skills
  • Current White Card (or able to obtain it before site work) and a valid Australian driver licence (or the ability to obtain one), plus willingness to move between project sites across Western Australia
